Will AI Replace Personal Trainers? Here’s My Take

The way I see it is that people hire a personal trainer for two reasons: direction and accountability.

Direction is when you’re very motivated to get in the gym, but don’t know what to do once you get there. With accountability, you know what you should be doing. Maybe you could even write the program yourself. But you’re not hitting the gym because you don’t have the self-motivation or self-discipline.

Now, there’s no shame in either one. And for many people, the reason for hiring a personal trainer is a combination of the two.

But lately, people have started asking me, “Meghan, are you worried about AI? Are you worried about ChatGPT taking over your job?” And I’m not. While my job revolves around coaching, supporting, and educating people in fitness, there will always be a human component AI can’t replace.

Can ChatGPT Replace a Personal Trainer?

In short, I don’t think so.

To be clear, I’m not really much of a tech person. And the whole reason I built an actual physical space is because I didn’t want to build another app or push sales on social media. That’s not really my thing.

But I understand the world we live in. I know so many people who use AI every single day. And plenty of people use AI to answer questions about their health and fitness. It’s similar to how we used to Google everything.

And yes, AI is really efficient at that, and it usually provides a really concise and easy-to-understand answer. So you can ask ChatGPT what to do for your exercise program, nutrition, all of it, and you’ll get real information that can be useful.

However, I look at ChatGPT and other AI apps the same way I look at Pinterest, YouTube, and Google. You get free access to information; that’s great. It’s genuinely a good thing that we can learn so much by just reaching for our phone. But information isn’t the same as direction or accountability.

Why Hire a Personal Trainer

AI can write you a beautiful program. And it can provide it in a way that’s clean, easy to follow, and well-structured. But it can’t read and react to your body.

It can’t make adjustments because you’re progressing faster and decide you could push a little more this week. It won’t encourage you to go for that one more rep toward the end of your set. And it won’t realize when you’ve had a rough week, you’re run down, and shouldn’t be adding more this week.

It also won’t hold you accountable or care about you the way a person does. Information isn’t the same as direction, and a plan on paper isn’t the same as a relationship.

When I work with someone, I’m paying attention. I notice how you’re moving that day, how you’re recovering, and what your energy looks like when you walk in the door. I chat with you and find out whether you’ve been having a good or bad week. Then I take all of that and shape the plan around you specifically, in the moment. This is something a screen can’t do. It never met you. It doesn’t know or care about you.

AI also won’t check in on you. It doesn’t wonder how you’re doing. It won’t celebrate with you when something actually clicks or when you finally hit that new PR. And this isn’t really a feature you can build into an app. Instead, it comes from real human connection.

So, I’m not worried about AI taking my job. It’s never going to replace the benefits you get when you work with an actual human who can read, react, and personalize. And that’s also what sets VIBE apart.

At VIBE in Sunnyside, you’re not getting an app or a cookie-cutter program that you’re left to follow on your own. Instead, we offer a 360-approach that covers your body, mind, and spirit.
